The news is all over the web. LeBron James and his long-time “love” Savannah Brinson are finally getting married. I must admit, I am a sucker for romance, and seeing the two of them all over the web today it is hard not to be happy for them and their two young children. The highschool sweethearts from a tough section of a hard luck town who stuck together through years of hard work (probably both’s) and mega success (LeBron’s) are finally making the ultimate commitment to one another. However, being a Cavs fan and seeing what his leaving did to the team as well as the team’s fans and to Cleveland, it is hard to be happy for LeBron. Since he left, I haven’t really wished LeBron the bad things of life, but I haven’t really wished him any good. The rational side of me recognizes that this young man had every right to forge his future with a team and in a city where he could realize his dreams. Isn’t that what we all want for our children? That they are not constrained by their circumstances in realizing their potential. Perhaps it is time for Cavs fans as well as the city of Cleveland to let go of the anger and sadness that followed LeBron’s leaving town, and be happy for him. He will, afterall, always be a son of north-east Ohio, and for that reason alone people here should support him. And..you never know — this region is also known for its “boomerangs” — young people who leave the area in an effort to make their fame and fortune, and then eventually boomerang home. Stranger things have happened.
