I was surprised the other day when the news showed several people being shown photos and being asked if they recognized the vice presidential candidates and none of them did. I thought everyone had been watching election 2016 unfold for the last year and a half but apparently not. Am I the only one who watched the irresponsible media build up Donald Trump and gleefully report on his bullying of the Republican establishment? In its quest to chase the next big story, am I the only one who saw the mischief they were making? Morning after morning I watched as Morning Joe and his sidekick Mika kissed up to Trump on his road to getting the nomination. How many times did they give him free air time for his early morning phone-in interviews. Wow – did he use them. Now they try to distance themselves and re-write history. Yes. They and their other weak media colleagues are responsible for the Republican party’s candidate. Too little too late, media. If Trump wins, it’s in large part due to the ineffective, reckless 4th Branch of Government a/k/a the 4th Estate. Whatever happened to objective journalism?

I read an interesting opinion piece this AM in the USA Today by a former reporter for CNN. He quit reporting about 8 years ago and teaches now. He was saying that in today’s market news people are expected to also be celebrity reporters, a la Billy Bush. And that he was pressured to take opinions on the stories that he was reporting by the likes of Nancy Grace. The dumbing down of the presentation of the news is troubling. And I think as a country we are valuing higher education less and less every year. Idiocracy here we come!

Interesting insight. I have thought a lot about the sad Billy Bush saga as many of us have, and I agree with the former reporter for CNN who you read about in the USA Today yesterday morning. I remember in journalism school 101, we were taught that in order to be a good journalist objectivity was key. We were taught that a journalist doing an interview shouldn’t even nod their head because they were there to ask questions and to hear the story not to try to direct the outcome. Journalism today seems to be all about celebrity. The TV “journalists” of today, but for a few, are so busy building their own subjective brand that the notion of objectivity and true objective reporting appears to be a product of a bygone era. I agree, the dumbing down of the presentation is troubling. Thanks for your post.
